چکیده

Metric indexes aim at reducing the amount of distance evaluations carried out when searching a metric space. Spatial approximation trees (sa-trees for short), in particular, are efficient data structures, which have shown to be competitive in metric spaces of medium to high difficulty, or queries with low selectivity. Sa-trees can be also made dynamic, and can use the available space to improve the query performance adding pivot information. In this paper we show how the pivot information added to dynamic sa-trees can be used to a full extent, in order to improve the search performance. The result is a technique that allows one to traverse a dynamic sa-tree without necessarily comparing all traversed nodes against the query object. As a result, the novel algorithm makes a much better use of the available space, yielding a saving of distance computations of about 10% to 70%, compared with previous sa-tree schemes that use pivot information.

Dynamic Pivoting by Shcur Decomposition Based Method for GLU Solver

This document presents the Schur-decomposition based dynamic pivoting method for GLU solver. The new pivoting method allows dynamic pivoting for small number of small valued pivots after the AMD (approximate minimum degree) ordering process and the symbolic analysis process in the GLU, which is similar to the left-looking method. This method will not be very effective if there is a large number...

An approximation algorithm and FPTAS for Tardy/Lost minimization with common due dates on a single machine

This paper addresses the Tardy/Lost penalty minimization with common due dates on a single machine. According to this performance measure, if the tardiness of a job exceeds a predefined value, the job will be lost and penalized by a fixed value. Initially, we present a 2-approximation algorithm and examine its worst case ratio bound. Then, a pseudo-polynomial dynamic programming algorithm is de...

Robust Planar Dynamic Pivoting by Regulating Inertial and Grip Forces

In this paper, we investigate the planar dynamic pivoting problem, in which a pinched object is reoriented to a desired pose through wrist swing motion and grip force regulation. Traditional approaches based on friction compensation do not work well for this problem, as we observe the torsional friction at the contact has large uncertainties during pivoting. In addition, the discontinuities of ...

Efficient Spatial Indexes for Approximate Range Searching

Building efficient spatial indexes for range searching is a central problem in spatial databases. The R-tree has been a popular spatial index thanks to its simplicity, ability to answer various queries, and the flexibility to store spatial objects of different shapes. However, the R-tree is known to be a heuristic-based structure and no guarantees can be made on its query performance. In this p...

OPTIMIZATION OF A PRODUCTION LOT SIZING PROBLEM WITH QUANTITY DISCOUNT

Dynamic lot sizing problem is one of the significant problem in industrial units and it has been considered by  many researchers. Considering the quantity discount in  purchasing cost is one of the important and practical assumptions in the field of inventory control models and it has been less focused in terms of stochastic version of dynamic lot sizing problem. In  this paper, stochastic dyn...
